Standedge Tunnel
Standedge Tunnel is the highest, longest and deepest
canal tunnel in the UK, stretching for 5,029 metres
(3.25 miles) through hard millstone grit. An engineering
marvel worked on by Thomas Telford, the tunnel runs from
Marsden in Yorkshire through to Diggle in Lancashire.

the geology and history of the tunnel, as well as
filling you with tales of the folk who designed, built

Visitor Centre and Exhibition
Our
Visitor Centre tells the fascinating history of the
tunnel and tells all you need to know about who built
the tunnel and how, as well as amazing facts about the
Huddersfield Narrow Canal.
The Nature Trail
Spend time enjoying the wonders of the great outdoors as
you follow the nature trail around Tunnel End Reservoir.

a delicious drink or snack? If the weather is good you
can dine alfresco in one of our outdoor seating or

Heritage Trail
As part of the Marsden Moor Heritage Trail, Standedge
Tunnel & Visitor Centre is set in the glorious foothills
of the South Pennine Moors, making this wonderful
country setting the perfect place to escape for the day!

Free parking is available next to Marsden Train Station.
You can then take the lovely 15-minute walk
along the towpath to the Visitor Centre. |
