Sun 25 Apr: Cuckoo
Festival 11am - 4pm.
This annual event welcomes the return of the cuckoo to Marsden
when the townspeople celebrate with a day-long festival.

Apr – St. George & the Dragon and Horseboating Society Legging
Event
1pm: 4 mile guided walk starting at Diggle side of
tunnel. Follow the boathorse along Boat Lane, over Standedge, to
Tunnel End while the boat is legged through the Tunnel below
you.
1pm: Storytelling walk from the Railway pub in Marsden to
Standedge, hearing tales as you go about the tunnel and dragons…
2pm: Maypole dancing & Morris dancing by Thieving
Magpies. Family activities with a St.George & the Dragon theme.
3.30pm: Arrival of Dragon Boat. Cheer on St.George as he
slays the dragon to rescue the villagers!

craftspeople.
Mon 3rd May: Horses
at Work at Standedge 10.30am – 2pm The Horseboating
Society will be spending the day at Standedge. Explaining how
horses were used on canals, and following on with some
traditions such as parading the horses for the May Holiday.
Visitors will be able to see how horses were worked as
boathorses, packhorses, and wagon horses before the tunnel
opened for use in 1811. The legging boat will enter the tunnel
at 1pm and again a guided walk will follow the boathorse over
Standedge, to the boat at Diggle.

A chance to learn some traditional canal arts and crafts with
local artist Pat Osborne. 10am - 4pm

Join John Gregory from the West Yorkshire Bat Group as he
explores Standedge and the surrounding area for bat activity.
This walk will help people understand the plight of bats and
raise the awareness of this mystical creature. 7.30pm - late

12 September: Heritage Open Day 2010
Free tunnel rock to the first 100 people through the door; free
boat trip at 10am on a first come; first served basis; the very
first public display of a rare Minute Book; Classic Car rally
with a vintage collection of cars from the Manchester group of
the Standard Motor Club; history of Marsden display by the

An amazing collection of eagles, falcons, hawks, kites, vultures
and owls from the Sion Hill Hall Bird of Prey Centre.
Spectacular flying demonstrations at 1pm and 3pm as well as the
chance to get the ultimate hands on experience by holding some
of the birds and speak to the expert handlers from Sion, who
will be able to explain why the birds hunt and fly as they do,
where they come from in the wild and how they are trained. 10am
- 4pm

A summer long celebration of all things arty! Visitors will be
able to enjoy a free art exhibition featuring more than 30 local
artists from the local area. The works will include ceramics,
watercolours, mixed media, textiles, acrylic and felt wall
hangings. The exhibition will be open 10.30am - 4:00pm each day. |
